Corrective Care Chiropractic

Corrective Care Chiropractic is a completely different approach to achieving and maintaining optimal health.

A true Corrective Care Chiropractor will evaluate the Central Nervous System (CNS) and spinal function.  The Chiropractic Corrective Care doctor evaluates the person for not only trauma and pathology but more importantly for function.

Since our CNS controls every single one of our cells, tissues, and organs we need it to function as close to 100% as possible.  When we see a patient for the first time at our clinic we always let them know there are two basic forms of chiropractic care. One being relief care, which is pain control, and the other is corrective care, which works on the underlying structural abnormalities (that are causing the pain) to make a more permanent change.  It's kind of like spinal orthodontics.

Although all Chiropractors are able to give relief care, the Corrective Care doctors and staff at Barton Chiropractic will search for the true cause of any health condition and design a specific plan of action for each patient.

The Corrective Care adjustment and alignment process, similar to what an Orthodontist does to teeth to correct their alignment, in time can often correct the spinal alignment. Thus stopping, or at least, slowing down the degenerative decay in the spine.

This often requires several visits over a period of time. However, it will not require bracing the spine but instead giving very specific Chiropractic adjustments to slow down the degeneration at the spinal level and improve nerve function. Corrective Care Chiropractic can aid in building a healthy body and immune system by slowing down mechanical decay in the spine and helping the patient to function at an optimal level to maximize their overall health and quality of life.
-Dr. Jon Baker, D.C.

If you or one of your family members have not been checked for spinal misalignment within the last year, you could be suffering from spinal degeneration and not even know it.

Why would anybody go to this Chiropractor in Concord when he openly admits that he has never healed anyone?

  Crazy huh?

For almost 30 years, thousands of people have gone to see this doctor for everything from pinched nerves, neck pain, headaches, asthma, A.D.D., diabetes, GURD, back pain even infertility and erectile dysfunction. And to this day he still maintains that he has never cured or healed anyone.

You see, this doctor firmly believes that no doctor has ever healed anyone. So often doctors try to play God thinking that they can actually heal people but that is just not true.

Research has proven that your body is a self healing organism. It needs no help whatsoever to heal. It just needs no interference. Your Body has an innate intelligence inside of it that regulates and controls all of its functions. The Bible says that God breathed life into man and many people believe that it is this life or innate that keeps you and I alive.

Now imagine for  just a minute that your brain is controlling all of your bodily functions sending messages down your spinal cord and out to all the tissues in your body. Regulating everything that your body does, and everything is functioning at 100%. You are as healthy as you can possibly be.

But what if something was to interfere with your brains ability to control the organs in your body. Lets just say for instance your heart. Do you think you would be healthier or sicker? Sicker, every time.

Every day we have trauma in our life. Sometimes this trauma is so severe or goes on for so long that it can actually cause the bones in your spine that are protecting your nervous system, to be moved out of place. This can put pressure on spinal nerves.

That's right, a spinal bone out of place can put pressure on your nervous system and cause a decrease in function of your body.

Now, if that bone is protecting the nerve that goes to your heart, and you put pressure on the nerve that goes to your heart, are you going to be sicker or healthier? What if the nerve goes to your stomach? Did you ever think about the fact that the same nerve that goes to your low back and frequently causes low back pain also controls your ovaries, uterus, and penis?

What if a doctor was trained in detecting and correcting these misaligned vertebrae (subluxations)? Can  you see that as the pressure is removed from the nerve that not only could the low back pain go away but even the erectile dysfunction or infertility or abnormal menstrual cramping, irregular menstrual cycles?

At Barton Chiropractic, that is just what we do! We detect and correct subluxations allowing your body to function at 100% so that it can heal itself. This is done through a series of gentle Chiropractic adjustments.

If you have a spine, you more than likely have Subluxations (spinal bones that are in the wrong place), decreasing your bodies ability to function at 100%. This may or may not be causing symptoms. We have found that symptoms are often not present until the problem has gotten really bad. A person that has just had a heart attack did not just suddenly develop heart problems. The heart was bad way before the symptoms arose.

If you are suffering, we can help! Visit our office at Concord Chiropractor or call our office at 925 685-2002 to schedule a free consultation with one of our doctors.

Subluxation Degeneration

Doctors of Chiropractic know that when a Subluxation is left uncorrected over years , a process known as Subluxation Degeneration will occur. This process is not unlike leaving a cavity in a tooth to degenerate and rot away. Others (in Medicine) may incorrectly define this as “spinal arthritis,” an accurate description, (arth = joint and it is= inflammation).  The reality is, Subluxation Degeneration is not a disease process; it is your body trying to prevent worse damage, like spinal fracture. All because you have vertebrae that are out of alignment with one another. Chiropractors correct subluxation preventing this process.

There are four phases of Subluxation Degeneration, up to and including spinal fusion.

This video was prepared by Dr. Joseph Ferrantelli .
He does an excellent job of demonstrating the degeneration that takes place with Subluxation.

This process unfortunately is often painless. Often times during a consultation with a patient they will say something like;  " My back goes out once and a while, but it usually goes away in a couple of days," or I just thought it would go away. Just like a tooth ache that may come and go will eventually lead to a rotten tooth possibly a root canal, Subluxation leads to Subluxation Degeneration.

How important is it to go to the dentist and get a check up periodically?

It is every bit as important to get your spine checked to assure that your body is functioning at 100% and not premature joint degeneration.

Chiropractic Adjustments removes Vertebral Subluxation Complex

What is Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC)?

Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) is THE most serious threat to your health and well-being.

chiropractic

Let's take a moment to take a look at where health comes from.

Your brain and the nervous system controls and coordinates every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body.

VSC is a serious interference with that control and coordination, allowing chaos within your body, instead of harmony.

When one or more vertebrae are out of proper juxtaposition and/or not functioning properly, there will be an interference to the normal transmission of what we call “the mental impulse.” This is Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC). It can cause an ache or a pain, anything at all up to and including life-threatening disease. Disease begins with “dis-ease,” a lack of ease, of health.

DD-disease as disturbedVSC causes you to express less Life. It causes you to express less of your genetic potential, which is one reason why it is so important for children to be under regular, wellness chiropractic care.

Subluxation Degeneration

chiropracticWhen a Subluxation is left uncorrected over years , a process known as Subluxation Degeneration will occur. Subluxation Degeneration is a condition where the joints wear out prematurely and your spine literally decays like a rotting tooth. Many people go to the chiropractor for regular check ups to make sure that they are not suffering from spinal degeneration.

Only a proper chiropractic examination, including X-rays and neurological examination, can detect VSC.  And only Chiropractic Adjustments can correct VSC.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic Adjustments Are Essential to Health as Well as Prevention

The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is not to treat back pain, though relief of back pain and neck pain is often a nice side effect. Chiropractic adjustments correct Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC), allowing your body to heal and function at a higher level… physically, mentally and socially.
Chiropractic adjustments are gentle, specific and scientific.

Our main technique is Gonstead, which can be exceptionally gentle, and specific, allowing me to adjust a particular subluxated vertebra in several planes of motion. It also allows me to adjust spinal discs, the temporo-mandibular joints, and extremities (hips, knees, shoulders, etc.)

Proper chiropractic analysis is always applied, with the basic information of initial exam, X-rays and neurological exams, and periodic progressive exams, along with analysis on every visit, pre and post every adjustment. This is not just “How do you feel?”

What do you think would happen If you stopped brushing your teeth?

What if you never went to the dentist to have him check your teeth? Does it make sense that someone would live with the pain. Or just wait for it to go away?

You can prevent Subluxation Degeneration.

Asthma Cases Rising At Alarming Rate

 Concord Chiropractor Helps Asthma ?

This once rare disorder has exploded in incidence and is now the most common chronic disease of children. Some think it’s due to a combination of factors such as, the increasing use of vaccinations, the increase of chemicals in our environment, and our energy efficient, airtight, super-insulated homes that can trap chemicals, molds and formaldehyde as well as other irritants. Even the increasing use of cesarean births and antibiotics have been cited.

The root of asthma can be found in an improperly responding nervous system (neurogenic asthma), immune system (allergic asthma) or inflammatory system (inflammatory asthma).

Why Chiropractic Helps Asthma and Allergies

Your diaphragm is the primary muscle used for breathing. Nerves that exit the spinal cord in the mid-neck (C3, C4 and C5) area control each breath . Pressure on the nervous system in this area can affect the nerve supply to the diaphragm. Chiropractors have found that irritation of the vagus nerve (which can be affected by subluxation (aka misalignment)  in the upper neck involving one of the top 2 vertebrae) or suppression of sympathetic nerve fibers (in the mid-back/thoracic spine) can lead to bronchial spasm. A chronic subluxation in the upper neck or other related area of the spine can put the nervous system close to threshold in spontaneously constricting the muscles of the bronchial tubes.

Asthma researchers say that an overactive parasympathetic nervous system can explain why such nonspecific stimuli such as smoke, viruses and even sudden weather changes trigger wheezing in both allergic and nonallergic asthmatics.

Barton Chiropractic , through specific Chiropractic adjustments, is able to restore proper nervous system control of the lungs, allowing the body to function at an optimum level!

Ever since I was 4 years old, I have had the worst allergies! Every picture I would have swollen eyes with dark circles under them. Since I started coming t o Dr. Barton I haven’t had hardly any allergy attacks. The best part… no more drugs. No sprays, drops, or pills.

Thank you,
Laura

Chiropractic And Spinal Stenosis Pain

Case Study Shows Chiropractic Benefit for   Spinal Stenosis

It is now easier than ever to get relief from Spinal Stenosis Pain. Chiropractor in Concord , Barton Chiropractic, has long been recognized as a leader in patient care.

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a condition resulting in narrowing of the spinal canal and pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerve roots. Degenerative changes are also common.  The patient commonly has chronic low back pain and unilateral or bilateral leg symptoms.

May 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT):  Case report of how chiropractic helped a patient with Spinal Stenosis.

In this study a 78-year-old man had low back pain and severe bilateral leg pains.

The patient in this study was a 78-year-old man with acquired degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. The onset was slow and progressive with increasing low back pain of 2 years' duration and progressively worsening bilateral anterior leg pain of 4 months' duration.  The patient described an "achy low back" pain with a belt-line distribution and an “electric,” “sharp,” and “crampy” pain along the front of the lower leg.  The MRI study of his lower back reveled a narrowing of the spinal canal.

In this case the man underwent an initial course of chiropractic care for a two week period during which significant changes were noted by the patient. ( Years worth of damage, only two weeks of care and he was showing improvement!)

The conclusion of the case report demonstrates successful care of a patient with symptoms either caused by or complicated by central spinal cord stenosis.

If you or someone you know is suffering from Spinal Stenosis there is hope. We may be able to help you! Call 925 685-2002 to schedule a free consultation to see if we can help you.

14 Natural Pain Relievers

Barton Chiropractic in Concord has been helping both children and adults suffering from back pain since back pain would really love to be less dependent on painkillers to manage their pain. But how? Natural pain relievers really can help. Here’s a list that might help – each of these won’t be for everyone, but any number of these natural pain relievers might help you be able to rely less on pain medications and feel more in control of your life.
1986. We have found that many who live with chronic

1. Release your inner endorphins. These natural chemicals block pain signals from reaching your brain. Endorphins are the body’s natural pain relievers, and they can be as strong as many of the strongest pain relievers. Endorphins also help alleviate anxiety, stress and depression — conditions that often accompany and exacerbate chronic pain. The body produces endorphins during aerobic exercise. A “runner’s high” is not just for those running long distances — any activity that gets your blood pumping for a sustained period will release pain relieving endorphins into your system.

2. Find good company. Those who have regular contact with others dealing with similar forms of chronic pain find that their pain becomes more manageable. An online group that is both active and supportive is best. Members of the Spine-health.com Back Pain and Chronic Pain discussion forums say that it is quite simply “free therapy”.

3. Eat cookies. Research shows that eating sweet foods like cookies, chocolate or ice cream, helps reduce the sensation of pain.

4. Or just bake the cookies. Enjoying a smell that is both sweet and pleasant has been shown to reduce the perception of pain.

5. Feel the heat. Applying some form of heat — a hot water bottle, gel-filled pad heated in the microwave, electric heating pad, or hot bath — can go a long way in easing your pain. Benefits of heat are twofold: it increases the flow of healing oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area, and it suppresses pain signals being sent to your brain. Some find that wearing a heat wrap, such as Thermacare heat wrap, is best because it releases a low level heat for several hours and can be worn under clothes so you remain mobile.

6. Cool it with ice. Ahh, how this cools down inflamed and sore tissues. Back pain almost always comes with some level of inflammation, and ice is the best natural way to reduce it. Ice also helps by acting as a local anesthetic, and by slowing the nerve impulses, which in turn interrupts the pain-spasm reactions between the nerves in the affected area.

7. Loosen up. Almost everyone can benefit from stretching the soft tissues - the muscles, ligaments and tendons - in and around the spine. Your back is designed for movement, and if your motion is limited it can make your back pain worse. If you suffer from chronic back pain, you may find it takes weeks or months of stretching to loosen up your spine and soft tissues, but you will find that meaningful and sustained pain relief will follow the increase in motion.

8. Enjoy the outdoors. People who got the recommended daily 400 to 800 IU of vitamin D experienced less pain than those who didn’t, according to a Boston University study of 221 men and women with knee osteoarthritis. Researchers surmised that Vitamin D helps relieve pain by aiding in the absorption of calcium, which is needed for bone growth and repair. Other research shows vitamin D may directly help soothe pain. 93% of 150 people with unexplained sources of pain were recently found to be deficient in Vitamin D levels, according to recent research at the University of Minnesota. About 15 minutes of sun exposure on your face and hands a day is enough to get your daily dose of D, or a 200-IU supplement of Vitamin D and as much calcium as is found in two glasses of milk.

9. Imagine yourself to a better place. Guided imagery allows you to hear and internalize therapeutic suggestions that help you feel better. In one study of 28 women with osteoarthritis pain, half of the women listened to a 10- to 15-minute recorded script twice daily that guided them through muscle relaxation techniques. On average, women in the guided imagery group reported that their pain eased by 18% and that their mobility improved by 13%; vs. those in the control group who experienced a 16% worsening of pain and a 2% decrease in mobility. Guided imagery can be learned with a practitioner or on your own using audiotapes or CDs.

10. Change your inner thinking. Hypnosis involves influencing the subconscious mind in order to change your inner thinking, thereby enabling you to change the way you view pain and assisting in the your body’s healing process. The human body has an infinite capacity for healing, and this is just one technique that many find helpful.

11. Meditate twice daily. Easy to learn and immediate results make this one of my favorite paths to natural pain relief. Meditation comes in a huge variety of forms –some complex, some simple. My personal favorite is just to find a sound that is pleasing to you but has no particular meaning (my sound is “som”), close your eyes, sit (or lie) still and comfortably, and repeat the sound in your mind. When your thoughts wander, notice that they have wandered and return to your sound. If you feel your pain, notice the pain and return to your sound. Start with a few minutes, and gradually lengthen to thirty minutes. You will find yourself refreshed and reinvigorated, with less pain overall. Meditation can also help reduce the depression, anxiety, stress and sleeping problems that often accompany chronic pain.

12. Realign your energy flow. The mechanism of action for the ancient Chinese healing technique of acupucture is still not completely understood, but it has been proven in medical trials to reduce certain types of chronic pain, including back pain. The American Association of Oriental Medicine has a list of trained acupuncturists. P.S. the needles are super-thin and not painful.

13. Get enough restorative sleep. Getting enough sleep is critical to managing the pain and healing, so it’s important to employ a variety of sleep aids to help you get a healthy amount of sleep. Regular exercise that physically exhausts the body is the best way to promote deep sleep. Visualization, meditation, and other psychological techniques can also help you get to sleep and stay asleep. And don’t forget the power of naps.

14. Enjoy a massage. In my book, nothing beats a good therapeutic massage. It gets the blood flowing, which helps nourish and heal the body, and releases endorphins, which release powerful pain relieving substances in the body (see first point on the list).

Herniated Disc and Back Pain

Herniated Disc and Back Pain

For 26 years Barton Chiropractic has consistently been one of the top chiropractic offices in Concord. We have helped hundreds of patients suffering from bulging disc and back pain. Our gentle chiropractic care is designed to get you out of pain and keep you out of pain as fast as possible and as gently as possible.
Chiropractic can have great sucsess in removing back pain if done correctly. We start with a thorough consultation then an examination utilizing chiropractic, orthopedic and neurological testing. If at that point we believe that your back pain or neck pain is caused by a chiropractic problem, we will take x-rays.

X-Rays
I realize that there are chiropractors that do not take x-rays. In believe that they are absolutely necessary. Last month we found two fractures and one case of cancer. Adjusting a spine with a fracture could have devastating results, and we would not have known without x-rays. Secondly, when vertebrea misalign, they do not just go “out.”  The first move toward the back of the spine then rotate right or left then they can wedge on the right or left side. In order correct this with the utmost accuracy you must know exactly how that vertebrea is misaligned. Without all the information, one can only hope for so so results. You get what you pay for.

Disc Herniation
Herniation describes an abnormality of the intervertebral disc that is also known as a "slipped disc," "ruptured disc," or "torn disc. This process occurs when the inner core (nucleus pulposus) of the intervertebral disc bulges out through the outer layer of ligaments that surround the disc (annulus fibrosis). This tear in the annulus fibrosis causes pain in the back at the point of herniation. If the protruding disc presses on a spinal nerve, the pain may spread to the area of the body that is served by that nerve. Between each vertebra in the spine are a pair of spinal nerves, which branch off from the spinal cord to a specific area in the body. Any part of the skin that can experience hot and cold, pain or touch refers that sensation to the brain through one of these nerves. In turn, pressure on a spinal nerve from a herniated disc will cause pain in the part of the body that is served by that nerve.

Four Degrees of Disc Herniation:
Nuclear Herniation, Disc Protrusion, Nuclear Extrusion, and Sequestered Nucleus

Most disc ruptures will occur when a person is in their thirties or forties when the nucleus pulposus is still a gelatin-like substance. Oddly enough, most disc herniations will occur in the morning. The causes of this phenomenon are not entirely known, but are probably due to the physiology of the spine and the changes in the water content of the disc that occur throughout the day. The two most common locations for a herniated disc in the lower back are at the disc between fourth and fifth lumbar vertebra (L4-5) and at disc between the fifth lumbar vertebra and the first sacral vertebra (L5-S1). These two discs account for 98 percent of all painful disc herniations. A herniated disc can occur elsewhere along the spine, but low lumbar herniations are by far the most common.

Symptoms
Usually a patient's main complaint is a sharp, cutting pain. In some cases there may be a previous history of episodes of localized low back pain, which is present in the back and continues down the leg that is served by the affected nerve. This pain is usually described as a deep and sharp pain, which gets worse as it moves down the affected leg. The onset of pain with a herniated disc may occur out of the blue or it may be announced by a tearing or snapping sensation in the spine that is thought to be the result of a sudden tear of part of the annulus fibrosis.

Diagnosis
A patient with a herniated disc will usually complain of low back pain that may or may not radiate into different parts of the body. They will often demonstrate a limitation in range of motion when asked to bend forward or lean backwards, and they may lean to one side as they try to bend forward. Patients will sometimes walk with an "antalgic" or painful gait, flexing the affected leg so as not to put too much weight on the side of the body that hurts. Straight leg raising may be positive indicating tension on the nerve root.
Abnormalities in the strength and sensation of particular parts of the body that are found with a neurological examination performed by a chiropractic doctor provide the most objective evidence of nerve root compression. There are no laboratory tests that can detect the presence or absence of a herniated disc, but they may be helpful in the diagnosis of unusual causes of nerve root pain and irritation. An MRI is the test of choice for diagnosis of a herniated disc, but a CT scan (CAT scan) may often be helpful because it provides better visualization of the bony anatomy of the spinal column, indicating where the source of pressure on the nerve root is located.

Treatment
The treatment for vast majority of patients with a herniated disc rarely requires surgery. Eighty percent of patients will respond to conservative Chiropractic care. The primary elements of conservative treatment are Specific Chiropractic adjustments and controlled physical activity. Usually treatment will begin with very short period of bed rest followed by a gradual return to normal activities. Sitting is bad for this condition because the sitting posture puts a large amount of stress and pressure on the lumbar spine, which may increase the pressure on the affected nerve root.
